Memory Landscape: HK & LA Photo Story Exhibition

Is it ‘Landscape Memory’ or ‘Memory Landscape’? Andrew Freeman once mentioned that a landscape carries memory while memory itself can create a landscape. When you hear the word “landscape”, what comes to your mind? Do you think about certain people or things? And what evokes that feeling?

The exhibition was a collaboration between TOE and Community Arts Partnership (CAP) of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Based on their “personal timelines” and old family photos, 64 students in Hong Kong and Los Angeles told their stories through images. The photo story exhibition attempted to put together “memories” and “landscape” using images. From the perspective of a traveller, by looking at the natural landscapes of the Hong Kong and Los Angeles, the audience had a glimpse of the cultural landscape of the two cities. In addition, they could also observe the interdependent relationship between humans and their surroundings.
