Every year, Through Our Eyes (TOE) Photography Education Programme holds an exhibition – in different forms and styles – to showcase students’ work as the year’s programme comes to its end. The works displayed at Photo Matters: Book and Print Festival 2016 were the result of students’ exploration and reconfiguration of paper objects such as books and magazines. The students have come a long way since they first asked “What is photography?”: they took classes that pushed them to observe themselves with a closer eye, and then they contemplated the issues at hand again, until eventually they found the answer in their very own images. From taking photos to creating their collection, the students were given time and space to sort out their thoughts and ideas; what they had gone through collectively was a complete photographic journey.
Photo Matters: Book and Print Festival 2016 brought to us over a hundred works by TOE students and Artist Educators. Images were preserved in the form of books and were being circulated among the audience. We also invited five artists and independent publishing units to share with us a selection of photography books, which helped us reimagine the possibilities of the photographic art.
