Yuen Long Culture · lifestyle · Flagship Store
Exhibition Period
10:30-20:30 (Sun-Thu)
10:30-21:00 (Fri-Sat)
49-63 Castle Peak Road, Yuen Long, N.T.

The objective of the mobile exhibition is to bring the exhibition to different places in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. We leave behind the conventional venue and engage the community and the quotidian, bonding the exhibited works and the artists with the physical sites. This is why we decided to bring the exhibition to the culture and lifestyle store of Joint Publishing (JP) in Yuen Long.

JP’s Yuen Long branch is a flagship store that brings together reading, lifestyle and culture. The four-storey bookshop features different themes on each floor, it is the venue for book launch, workshop, seminar, exhibition, etc.

Three groups exhibit their works here, one of them publishes a collection of photos with the theme “Connections”: each participant picked a group of people for photo shoot, for example, some chose busking artist on street, some took pictures of the partners who co-rent a studio, or an old farmer and the young people who help her. By photographing certain groups of people, the collection explores the connections between individuals.

Instagram (IG) is one of the most popular social media among youngsters, it is also a platform that showcases images. The exhibited works of the second art group revolves around the concept of IG: the Artist Educator asked the students to create a work in the form of a printed IG and make use of film camera to shoot. By prolonging the process of producing an image, students inadvertently slowed down their pace. They were given a chance to experience the temperature and weight of each image. Also, we would like to turn the bookstore environment into an opportunity for creativity. While students’ collage-installation works are shown outside the classroom, it gives us the occasion to re-examine the relationship between the exhibited works and the venue.

We also show the works of the TOE Advanced Course. These works use book as a medium and depict the personal belongings valued by the photographers. When participants had a better grasp of the camera and the lighting technique, they were able to shoot with personal style and profundity.
