From a beginner's point of view, learning photography is more difficult nowadays: the automatic functions of digital cameras deprive one of the comprehensive experience of image-making. Treating photography as an art medium, what one would have missed was not just the bare essentials of photography, but also the essence of art.
Light and time, the two very basic elements in photography, are also the foundations of life – the sun nurtures life, and time defines us. Therefore, photography is a good way to explore what life really is.
This course studies photography in regard to its most basic aspects. By experimenting with and understanding the medium, students make use of its specific qualities and celebrate beauty and values with light and time. Over the span of the course, students reflect on the intrinsic nature of things and widen their scope of imagination about the world. At the same time, the experience will enrich their artistic skills and help them further develop in the field of visual arts. Apart from theories and discussions, a variety of experimental workshops are included in the course, such as creating pinhole cameras and solargraphs, lumen printing, cyanotype, traditional black and white photography and experimenting with exposure time. Finally, students will use “light and time” as the topic for their work, applying the skills they have learned to express their feelings. They are free to express their thoughts and feelings about life when creating their work, which is not limited to two-dimensional images.
