Photo Matters: Book and Print Festival

A Journey from Photo Taking to Printed Matter Making

When was the last time you flip through a photo album? Ever since we start storing photos on computers and mobile phones, sharing photos has never been more convenient; a simple swipe is all it takes to connect to others and share the images. While the process is certainly hassle-free and efficient, it entails a certain lack and absence.

Every year, Through Our Eyes (TOE) Photography Education Programme holds an exhibition – in different forms and styles – to showcase students’ work as the programme comes to its end. The works display this year in Photo Matters: Book and Print Festival 2016 are the result of students’ exploration and reconfiguration of books, magazines and other forms of paper. Imaginative and innovative, the students experimented with materials, sizes, printing, layout and even the way they turned the page. During the process, they were presented with the infinite possibilities of photo reading by playing with elements such as time, sequence, speed and pace. Using paper as the unchanging medium, they tried to embody different styles, different sentiments and different stories through the connecting images.

The students have come a long way since they first asked “What is photography?”: they took classes that pushed them to observe themselves with a closer eye, and then they contemplated the issues at hand again, until eventually they found the answer in their very own image. When you look at their works, you will see a series of micro but complete exhibition, you can feel and engage with what they think about life. When the students were going through and arranging their works, their pace slowed down. It allowed them to view and absorb the images taken by their very own hands, soon it became clear to them what they were actually looking at, and what were the issues at heart. From taking photos to creating their collection, the students were given time and space to sort out their thoughts and ideas; what they have gone through collectively, is a complete, photographic journey.

Photo Matters: Book and Print Festival 2016 brings to us over a hundred pieces of work by TOE students and artists-educators. We have also invited five artists and independent publishing units to share with us a selection of photography books, which help us reimagine the possibilities of the art of taking photos. Talks and workshops will also be organised as part of the festival, and we welcome each and every one of you to join us in understanding the world through the eyes of students and photography.

When images are stored in books, they are safeguarded and circulated. We cordially invite you to come and turn over the pages with your hand, and let an intimate conversation begin.

Through Our Eyes

Founded by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation in 2005, Through Our Eyes (TOE) Photography Education Programme was handed over to and operated by kaitak, Centre for Research and Development of the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013.

The TOE Programme aims to provide a creative and engaging learning environment in which young people and the wider community can express themselves through the medium of photography. Our vision is to offer people new insight into seeing things from their own perspectives, enabling them to break away from preconceived notions framed by existing visual images and rediscovering the connections between their inner selves and their families, communities, cultures and social environments. Through a variety of workshops and social practice art projects, we seek to define photography in its broadest and most expansive forms and engage with people, especially the younger generation, to explore the possibilities of the medium and inspire their creativity.

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation

A private philanthropic organisation founded in Hong Kong in 2005, The Foundation’s dual mission is to foster appreciation of Chinese arts and culture to advance global learning and to cultivate deeper understanding of Buddhism in the context of contemporary life. The Foundation has a strong belief in the importance of educating the whole person. Personal inquiry and expression enable us to be most effective in our lives, to cultivate understanding of other people, and to bring about positive change in the world.

Since 2005, The Foundation is dedicated to promoting creative arts education for the children and youth of Hong Kong. Through a variety of initiatives such as Through Our Eyes photography education programme, Leap! body movement education programme, and Get it Write! writing education programme, the Foundation nurtures the younger generation’s creativities, encourages them to appreciate art and culture as well as to establish a connection with the society through developing a deeper understanding of their own self, community, history, culture and environment.

kaitak, Centre for Research and Development

kaitak, Centre for Research and Development in Visual Arts was established by the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013 to enhance the visual arts development in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions. The Centre is housed in the former Royal Air Force Officers’ Mess – a Grade I listed historic building located on a serene hilltop overlooking the old Kai Tak Air Field.

The Centre divides into 3 main branches which are the Research Hub, VArtCommunity and Young Artist Agency, offering a vibrant programme of artist-in-residence, exhibition, workshop, artist talk, guided tour and screening, as well as a variety of publications and online resources.

Our goals are to promote new knowledge and research in the field of visual arts, raise the public’s interest in arts appreciation and participation and facilitate the professional development of young artists.

The Centre also delivers a wide and varied education and outreach programme for schools and community groups. Through Our Eyes Photography Education Programme, founded and funded by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, is one of the flagship programmes organised under the umbrella of VArtCommunity.
